History | Program Overview-How does it Work? | Children's Scholarship Fund
The BASIC Fund was founded on the principle that all families should have an equal opportunity, regardless of income, to choose the best school for their children.

Participating families are required to contribute to their children’s education and are therefore responsible for costs not covered by the scholarship. Grants are renewable annually provided that the family keeps up their portion of the tuition payments, the family remains financially eligible, and the child remains enrolled in an accredited private school in Kindergarten through eighth grade.

The BASIC Fund awards scholarships to families that meet the following criteria:

  • Your child will attend a private school in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, or San Mateo County in the upcoming school year.
  • Your child meets all academic and other admissions requirements of that school.
  • Your child will be entering kindergarten through eighth grade in the upcoming school year.
  • Your family qualifies for assistance under the guidelines spelled out in the application. They are somewhat consistent with the guidelines set up for the Free or Reduced Price Federal Lunch Program.
  • Parents must agree to be involved in their children’s education.

After the application is received the family will be notified by early May that they have received a BASIC Fund Scholarship. If sufficient scholarships are not available to accommodate all eligible applicants then a lottery will be held. Historically, all eligible students have been accepted without a lottery being necessary.

The scholarships are renewable each year as long as the family remains financially eligible and they keep up their portion of the payments. We have a plan in place to carry the scholarship recipients through 8th grade.
